Systems engineering

Consultancy on systems extends from the initiation phase right up to options for recycling. Both the systems linked to the building and various user facilities make up part of the total package. Consultancy and design of systems from an inter-disciplinary perspective lie at the core of the process. Cost control, risk reduction and feasibility are the results for the client and constructing parties. During construction ABT plays a guiding role, which is continued on completion and commissioning of the building systems.

Our consultancy work on systems technology concerns: air conditioning systems, lighting and power systems, security and communications, sanitary facilities and internal transport.

Air conditioning systems
Air conditioning systems determine to an important extent a building's internal environment. ABT aims for a healthy building with optimal comfort for the user at energy costs that are as low as possible. Healthy and comfortable buildings lead demonstrably to increased performance by the users. Proper design of the air conditioning systems starts with drawing up an energy concept in which the link between the building and the air conditioning system is thoroughly investigated. Core elements of the design are building size, building shell, energy efficiency, alternative sources of energy and efficient energy conversion.

ABT designs the entire air conditioning system. From generating heat and cold to delivery to the room and ventilation systems. During the initiation phase ABT is able to present different solution models that investigate both the investment and the total usage. A sustainable energy system, such as a geothermal system in the ground combined with heat pumps requires greater investment but recoups its costs over the life of the project. Good ventilation ensures a healthy building. ABT recommends a ventilation concept that suits the energy concept and meets the individual wishes of the users. 'Hybrid' ventilation is currently popular. Ventilation takes place using naturally powered forces such as the wind, unless this is inadequate. This leads to low energy consumption by fans and to ventilation quantities that adapt at any time to the needs of the user.

Light and power systems
ABT designs heavy current systems for various types of project and clients. Brand-independent lighting designs are created in this way, so that the client's wishes and budget can be met. Both functional and architectural designs are created for this, whereby functionality is not lost sight of in the case of architectonic lighting. Emergency lighting is essential in order to maintain security in a building and to prevent panic in the event of a power cut, and in many cases even obligatory. A good Programme of Requirements and design is of great significance in order to achieve the implementation of a good system. Power systems are designed for various types of authority, where flexibility, operational safety and ergonomics are investigated. For clients where a power cut could be catastrophic or life-threatening, such as hospitals, institutions, dealing rooms etc., emergency generators and redundancy are of great significance.

Security and communications
The building of today is inconceivable without modern communications using computers and phones. This then takes an increasingly important place in the design process. Systems designed for all the necessary telematics facilities, such as internal cabling systems, facilities for line transmission, computer network electronics and phone switchboards.

For good company security and user-friendly operation of systems it is important to observe the status and faults of various systems in time. This can be achieved in the form of building management systems, domotics or simple alarm and control panels. Depending on the size and the requirements, these systems can be designed to operate mechanical engineering systems, lighting switches, sun blinds, sound and public address systems and other operational and security systems. Given the increasingly stringent requirements on the part of the government and insurers, increasing requirements are imposed on the safety of persons and goods. For this, programmes of requirements and designs should be drawn up in the form of fire prevention, break-in security, access control, camera surveillance, intercom/videophone systems, lightning and overvoltage protection etc., where the type of structure and the organisation need to be taken into account. Coordinating architectural features, organisational measures and electronic measures is a must, in order to be able to provide a safe situation.

Sanitary facilities
Sanitary facilities are becoming increasingly complex as a result of new technology, new materials, sustainable construction and other environmental developments. Standards from government are also increasingly stringent. ABT advises different parties at all stages of the design and construction process, in order to meet the various requirements, wishes and regulations in as efficient a manner as possible. Gas, water and sewage systems fall under the sanitary facilities. The term sanitary is derived from the Latin “sanitas”, which means health. In order to promote hygiene and thus health, clean drinking water is provided and waste is removed. The systems needed for this are now essential resources in buildings.
In the light of the fact that environmental issues are receiving increasing attention, the sustainability of systems is becoming essential. For instance, the choice of materials but also limiting water consumption or recycling of water. Increasing yields in the use of fossil fuels or alternatives fall under this as well. ABT is able to advise on systems and the selection of materials in order to arrive at the right choice for the user, with respect to maintenance and cleaning as well.

Internal transport
The rising cost of land means that buildings are increasing in height. A good lift system for goods and persons is essential. In projects for handicapped people such as apartments for the elderly, care homes and hospitals, passenger lifts and lifting platforms have become essential. Sound advice on the type, size and speed is of great significance in order to avoid long waiting times.
