I graduated from TU Eindhoven as structural designer and architect. I find this a fascinating combination. For me, the best projects are those whereby architecture and construction strengthen each other, challenge each other, intertwine with each other. Construction becomes architecture and architecture becomes construction.
For me, constructing is more than just keeping a building erect and doing the calculation. I always want to understand what the architect and the client have in mind. My educational background enables me to translate their ideas into a good design. Translating something that initially seems enormously complicated into something ingeniously simple is always the ultimate challenge as far as I am concerned. I always found it a tremendous kick to see the design grow on paper. To work on it together with a team and then finally to see it implemented and to walk around in it.
An area in the construction world where a lot of awareness can still be won is sustainable construction and the sustainable use of materials. At ABT, I am the Chairman of the work group Sustainable Construction. Our goal is that sustainability will naturally become an integral part of the design, just like the cost aspect and the engineerability.
Immediately after my study I started at ABT as a constructor. I am now a project leader and structural designer for projects. I have gained extensive experience in a wide range of ambitious projects varying in scope and with many different kinds of construction materials. Besides my work at ABT, I teach structural design at ArtEZ, academy of architecture in Arnhem.
