In the past few decades, infrastructure works have become interesting architectural challenges. Bridges, for example, are no longer seen as just links between two points but more as landmarks – as a way of putting a city or region on the map. This had led to increased use of innovative construction techniques. And a great design depends crucially on the architect and design engineer working closely together.

ABT believes in fundamental thinking about the right approach to a project at the concept stage. This has produced some interesting solutions without adding to building costs.

The Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam was the first bridge with which the discipline was involved at the concept stage. Since then, many bridges and viaducts have been designed on the basis of radical integration of architecture and structure.
